Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans it is the potential for long-term maintenance of well-being, which in turn depends on the well-being of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources.

Sustainability has become a wide-ranging term that can be applied to almost every facet of life on Earth, from local to a global scale and over various time periods.

PCI Sustainability Case Studies:
This parking structure in Detroit, MI is one of the first in the U.S. to achieve LEED® certification. The structure boasts Detroit's only green/vegetative roof, which also has a fitness center and a walking track. Precast concrete was used to facilitate winter construction and support the heavy loads of a green roof.

Located in Elgin, IL this is one of the first hybrid buildings on the architectural landscape. Precast concrete replaces a conventional HVAC system with a thermal-mass system for greater energy efficiency.
Sustainability, a core value of Kettle Foods, is reflected in their Beloit, WI facility. Precast concrete walls, wind turbines, and native prairie grasses are sustainable components contributing to the companys recognition for building the greenest food-manufacturing plant in the U.S.
The capstone project for the athletic campus in the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Utilizing local materials, aggregates, and recycled content, precast concrete contributed to LEED® certification.
This total precast/prestressed mixed-use structure boasts thin-brick, used local materials, and improved indoor sound quality.
Thin-brick sandwich wall panels were chosen as they reduce the likelihood of mold, mildew, and moisture migration. Precast concrete supported an innovation in design LEED® credit because of the use of thin brick, which requires less energy to produce and transport.
HOK's headquarters is a model of the firms commitment to innovative and sustainable design. Constructed of natural materials, such as precast concrete, the green building utilizes nearby resources and maintains a small footprint, which does not contribute to the heat island effect.
